A watch diameter is given in millimetres, a wrist size in centimetres: not easy to connect the two. Here is a simple method to choose, with the diameters of our families.
Measure your wrist
Take a tailor's tape measure, or a strip of paper that you then lay against a ruler, and wrap it around your wrist just above the bone, where you wear your watch. Note the measurement in centimetres, without pulling tight.
The best guide: a watch you already wear
If you have a watch whose size you like, measure its case edge to edge, without the crown. That is your reference: aim for a similar diameter, or one or two millimetres more or less depending on the look you want. Look at the thickness too: at the same diameter, a slim watch looks smaller and slips more easily under a cuff.
Rough guidelines
Without a reference watch, these common guidelines give a starting point. They are not rules: style matters as much as size.
- Wrist under 16 cm: 31 to 38 mm.
- Wrist from 16 to 18 cm: 36 to 41 mm.
- Wrist over 18 cm: 40 to 43 mm.
